Finest fossil tree in the world!
This fossil looks like a tree stump, but is actually the roots from a giant moss called Lepidodendron! It lived about 300 million years ago and was found in Bradford, near Manchester. It would have grown to about the same height as the trees you see in Manchester parks today. It would have grown in a boggy swamp where giant rivers flowed through the landscape. Sediment from one of the rivers eventually buried it in the ground and it rotted away to leave a hole. The hole then filled with sand which turned to rock over time.ASK AN EXPERT
