Wood Wasp

This wasp does not sting!

13_Wood_Wasp

This wasp is approximately 4 cm long, looking fearsome, like the Hornet. Yet, what seems to be a sting in reality is an ovipositor, the device used by the female for laying eggs. The wasp can be seen in our gardens from May to October, usually in or near coniferous woods. The larvae feed on dead wood. Despite their appearance, these wasps are absolutely harmless and cannot sting.
