Violet Ground Beetle
A useful beetle in our gardens

A large beetle measuring about 20-30mm in length; common throughout the UK. The beetle can be found in gardens, farmland and meadows from March to October. It can be recognised by its black colour with a metallic purple sheen, especially around the flattened edges of its fused wing cases. It is a nocturnal predator feeding on smaller invertebrates, including many ‘pest’ species such as slugs.
