Humming-bird Hawk-moth

An unusual migrant from France

A medium-sized, day-flying moth that resembles a hummingbird as it flies rapidly between plants and hovers to feed over tubular flowers such as Viper’s-bugloss from June to September. Wingspan 50-58 mm. Although the moths can successfully breed in Britain, they are unable to survive the winter. Therefore, the continuing presence of this moth in British gardens depends on the annual migrations from France.
