Devil’s Coach-horse

Is it really a beetle?

One of the most common British beetles, with a long, black abdomen and short wing cases. At first glance it could be mistaken for an earwig. In Ireland, it was believed that the beetle had magic power that could kill merely by a look. However, the beetle’s power could be turned to your own advantage: if the beetle was imprisoned within the handles of someone’s scythe, his skill would improve.
