Mammals that eat plants usually have teeth that grow throughout their lives, because plants often have abrasive minerals built into their structure, causing animals’ teeth to wear down. You can tell if a tooth was still growing when an animal died, as the end of the root will be open. Rabbits, hares and rodents have very large incisors at the front of the mouth. Rabbits and hares also have a pair of tiny incisors behind the large ones. Animals that eat plants, including rodents, rabbits and hares, deer and sheep, and even wallabies, have a space behind their front teeth called a diastema where they gather plants together before chewing them.
