Fragments of beautiful containers

This glazed non-clay ceramic material is made of crushed quartz or sand and was given the characteristic blue colour by adding a copper compound to the mixture to create a glaze. It was widely used in ancient Egypt for amulets, shabtis, jewellery and containers. The technique to make faience was refined throughout ancient Egyptian history and modern day experimental archaeologists are still attempting to replicate high quality pieces using traditional methods of the time.
