Mummy wrappings

bell jar with sweepings_9943

This bell jar contains the ‘sweepings’ from a very famous mummy unwrapping that was conducted in Manchester in 1908. Dr Margaret Murray performed the scientific investigation of two Egyptian mummies, named Nakht-ankh and Khnum-nakht, to find out as much as possible from these precious remains. Most of the linen bandages were kept separately, but some of the bandages and much of the soft tissue turned to dust – and was kept in these jars.
