Petit tranchet arrowhead

Petit tranchet_9799

This piece of flint is a different kind of arrowhead. It has been made so that the leading edge is wide. These petit tranchet derivative (p.t.d) arrowheads were used for hunting game about 5000 years ago. The wide leading edge of the arrowhead created a large wound so that the prey animal would eventually bleed to death. There was also a greater chance of clipping the feathers of a bird using such wide arrowheads.
