Pieces of Staffordshire slipware
Don't eat this icing!

These pieces of pottery were made in Staffordshire during the 17th century. The slip that covers the surface has been dragged to create a combed effect. Anyone who has seen decorated icing in a cake shop will be familiar with the technique. The trailed slip is caught and dragged across the surface to create the distinctive combed effect seen here.
