Pieces of Roman samian ware pottery

Roman Teflon

IMG_9817

Pieces of Roman samian ware from Manchester. This distinctive orange red or reddish brown pottery was imported from Gaul or France in Roman times. During firing in the kiln, the minerals in the clay create an attractive, smooth and non-stick surface, rather like the Teflon coating found on modern saucepans. Roman potters made a wide range of plain and decorated pots in samian ware. Huge quantities were produced and pieces of broken samian often turn up on Roman sites such as Manchester.
